About me

My birth certificate lists my name as John Morrison, but I am John Doe, too.

American by birth, Christian by the grace of God. Raised in Riverside, California, settled in Eagle River, Alaska. Veteran, U.S. Army, 1971-1974 and 1985-1991.

Father of two awesome daughters, both as gifted as they are beautiful.  A believer since my youth in “one man, one woman, one lifetime, one marriage”, I find to my consternation that I have been to the altar four times- truly a testimony to the old adage that “remarriage  is the triumph of hope over experience”.  I have tentatively selected for my epitaph “Was never afraid to be a fool for love”.  My current (and final!) marriage is a testimony to God’s incomprehensible, unimaginable mercy, compassion, love, and humor.

Yes, that is a bagpipe I’m playing.  My father’s parents both came over here from the same village in Scotland.  Dad never made a fetish of being Scottish, but our family did attend some of the local Highland Games when I was a kid.  The bagpipes were, of course, impressive, and I had always thought how neat it would be to learn how to play them.  After about 30 years of telling people that, I finally realized how stupid I sounded.  “Either DO it”, I told myself, “or shut up about it!”

So… obviously, I did it, and it has been a source of great satisfaction.  I do not play in a pipe band, and I have not kept up with it regularly, but I accomplished something that had been of lifelong interest, purely for my own amusement and amazement.

Rather than boring you with more bio, I trust the blog will give you a pretty good picture of who I am. If you think you know, you don’t. Thanks for stopping by!

  1. John,

From another Orthodox blogger, kudos on a nice site. We’ll add those from your parish to our prayer list. My own semi-son, a student I sort of adopted, just got back from Iraq thankfully. All the best and pray for me,

    Kevin

  2. Hello, John :)

I was following up on a comment I made on another post of yours (the Palin interview), and wanted to touch base on the “replying to comments” issue here at WordPress.

You’re not missing a thing! Even though there are plugins that we can use on self hosted WordPress blogs that enable us to reply to specific comments, and even quote them if we want to… this function has not yet been incorporated to the blogs here on wp.com. I’m hoping they add this functionality SOON, it would make things so much easier!

Sorry to post this here, it just didn’t seem right to interrupt the flow of comments on the other post. :)

Off topic… My father was born in Fife, Scotland. He was one of ten children, all of which were born in Scotland, except 2. I’ve yet to visit there, but hope to some day.

Very nice blog you have here, congrats!

  3. Nice site.

I’m an Orthodox priest, and I’ve taken up piping too!

Plus, I attended seminary in Alaska! What a world!

  4. I am John Doe, and I AM JOE too.

  5. Dear John,
I discovered your site by sheer accident looking for the spelling of that idiotic term specie-ist. You are the man of my heart and soul.
I am originally a Czech and in my youth I witnessed yellow stars and disappearance of my friends. I remember walls of the Prague old synagogue covered with names of the Nazi victims in small print. And I too stand with Israel.

Glory to Alaska and Sarah Palin for president in 2012!

    • Dear Raul,
You obviously must be of my father’s generation to have seen those things… I am honored by your comment, and grateful for the technology that can bring us together.
The Czech Republic has been one of the places I have been most eager to visit since the collapse of the Soviet Empire and the end of it’s brutal European occupation. May it please God to make that trip a reality.
      God bless you as well.

  6. Hello! The link you provided just gives me a blank page (?)
