Time to declare victory and go home?

After reading this, I wonder if that wouldn’t make good political sense. The Iraqi government and Army have been moving from strength to strength against both Sunni and Shia militia, and Al-Qaeda itself is all but collapsed. In spite of the fact that even the New York Times and other liberal media outlets have been forced to acknowledge the astonishing progress, a President Obama might well feel compelled to declare defeat instead- can’t say Bush succeeded, can we? And if President Obama says we failed, the Islamists and their left wing apologists will happily say it is so. And so it will be.

And if it’s to be President McCain, why should President Bush feel any need to let him take undue credit for ending the war, when it will for all intents and purposes be finished by the time Bush leaves office?

Let the Iraqi parliament pass a resolution telling us “Thank you, your job is done, we’ll take it from here”. Or have a national plebiscite asking us to leave now. It is obvious to all by now that no one has chased us out. We say, on our way out the door, “Glad to have helped with your liberation- good luck with that!”

After that, what happens is up to the next guy, whichever it is. Bush leaves with the mission truly accomplished.
