Patricide and the “Death of the Grownup”

The article [The Fatherless Civilization] is from Europe, but what it describes is certainly in danger of becoming increasingly true here as well. A highly-recommended read.

During the first “Dark Ages”, the Christian monasteries- particularly the Irish and Irish-derived monasteries- provided the civilizational “islands of refuge” that made possible an eventual Renaissance. How many of you out there think it’s starting to look a lot like we’re well on our way towards “Dark Ages II”, what with the convergence of a militant, confident Islam and the self-loathing death wish of Western elites infecting every institution of society? Where will we find the islands of refuge this time? Can we hope for another, future “Renaissance II”, or might we be nearing the end of Act III, followed by the final curtain?

God knows, I don’t.

UPDATE: Apparently Time magazine had a recent article on the evolving “fatherhood/manhood” question.

Also, excellent discussions and comments on the topic at “On Tap” blog, here and a followup here.
